More commandments of our Lord Jesus Christ found in Mat 5
Salt of the Earth
Mat 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men."
Every Christian is the salt of the earth - makes food tasty. All your relatives, friends and brethren around you will taste your goodness of sincerity, faithfulness, high principle, trustworthiness, a man of virtue and honour. But the hypocrites, they will trample underfoot.
Light of the World
Mat 5:14-16 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."
Unbelievers from a distance can only see our light. Our care of the old folks and our tuition classes for the children were the light in Chinese villages in the 90s in Perak and 2000s in Pahang. They saw the light of our Lord Jesus in us and found that we were really the salt of the earth. The non Christians would help us to cook and prepare food for our classes, meetings, etc. Every evangelistic function was packed. Many found their salvation.
All the villagers were hoping that our young co-workers would become their sons-in-law or daughters-in-law.
No Divorce except for Adultery
Mat 5:31-32 "Furthermore it has been said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
Married couples are joined together by our Lord Jesus Christ and whoever (including husband and wife) causes the failure of the marriage will be judged.
Mat 19:5-6 and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."
Must not Swear
Mat 5:33-37 "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.' But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
All those who swear in the OT must perform their oaths. Our Lord Jesus commanded us not to swear at all, but to trust Him to honour, avenge or perform. It is His will to be done and not ours.
Offer the other Cheek
Mat 5:38-39 "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
This is the sign of progress to perfection. If we can turn the other cheek this is humility and there is no pride in us. On top of that we are crucifying our flesh.
Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself of me.
