What Are Sound Doctrines? (SD01)

Tit 1:9  holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

The last sermon of Jesus is now completed and since we are living in the last days, our Lord warned us of deceptions with heresies. Since everyone is claiming that they are teaching the truth and condemn the others as heretic, we will not be able to distinguish heresies from truth if we do not know sound doctrines.

2Pet 2:1-2  But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.

1Tim 6:3-6  If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.

Most of the doctrines of men and heresies come from the disputes and arguments over words (esp. using Hebrew and Greek to justify) but without taking into accounts God's attributes, will, sayings, teachings, promises, covenants, words, etc.

Mat 24:4-5  And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many."

Our Lord Jesus warned us to beware of deceptions for many will be deceived and this will lead many Christians to apostate.

2Thess 2:1,3  Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him...Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,

John 7:16-17  Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority."

Sound doctrines are doctrines of God and these are the words which God has commanded our Lord Jesus to speak to us.

John 12:49-50  "For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”

The words of our Lord Jesus Christ which are from God are sound doctrines. So any doctrine that contradicts His attributes, words, teachings, etc. is wrong doctrine and possibly heresy.

2Tim 4:1-4  I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

We are to preach His words, which are sound doctrines.

Mat 15:8-9  "'These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’"

Brethren, please keep out all teachings, commandments or doctrines of men from books, teachings, videos, etc. as we try to find the sound doctrine of each topic together by studying the scriptures from the bible only. With our submission to the Spirit of truth or Helper, He will guide us into all truth so that we will be able to avoid heresies by following, teaching and preaching sound doctrines.

Saved By Faith, Not Of Works (SD02)

Eph 2:8-9 _For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Christians are all saved by faith in God only. This faith towards God only is the elementary lesson for all new believers.

Heb 6:1  Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God.

What is faith towards God?

Heb 11:1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Faith is the substance (action) expressing the hope or belief in God. We have to walk (perform, work, do, action, response, etc,) by faith towards God in accordance to His words, commands, covenant, will, promise, etc.

2Cor 5:7  For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Heb 11:7  By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

The building of the ark (action =works) to save his family was the faith of Noah towards God.

Heb 11:8  By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

Abraham leaving Ur (action =works) was his faith towards God.

Heb 11:17  By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

Offering of Isaac as sacrifice (action =works) was Abraham faith towards God.

Jam 2:21  Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

Heb 11:22  By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.

Joseph's instructions concerning his bones (action =instruct) was his faith towards God of His promise of Israel possessing the Promise Land.

Heb 11:31  By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace.

Rahab receiving the spy with peace (action =works) was her faith towards the God of Abraham.

Jam 2:25  Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

Jam 2:19  You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!

The demons too believe there is one God, but did not confessed nor accept (no works) it, because Satan himself wants to be God. Also we cannot have wrong works or bad fruit.

1John 4:20  If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

Jam 2:26  For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also._

So Faith = Belief + Works needed to confirm his belief

We are saved by faith, i.e believe in Jesus as the propitiation of our sins and confess and accept (works) Him as our Lord and Saviour.

Brethren, no matter how much we sacrifice ourselves to please God, with all types of good and righteous works, there is no salvation besides the grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the sacrificial Lamb of God.

The Gospel Of Jesus Christ (SD03)

Mark 11:1-3  The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the Prophets: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You. The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.’ ”
The whole Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is the complete NT including the four gospels and all the epistles. These will include the gospel of salvation or message of the cross, sanctification or purification to holiness, transformation into His image, and the glorification as His bride, etc.

Gospel of Salvation

Luke 24:46-47  Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."

Our Lord sends us to preach the gospel of salvation to all nations. The gist of the gospel of salvation (message of the cross) is as follows:-

Christ was the Word made flesh, and the Baby born from the virgin Mary was called Jesus. Jesus was betrayed to the priesthood. He was scourged and crucified under Pontius Pilate as the sacrificial Lamb of God for the propitiation of our sins.

He descended to Hades and overcame death thus setting us free from the fear of death. On the third day, He was resurrected to the Father for glorification, so that the Spirit Who resurrected Him will also help us to be glorified in Him.

The Apostle's Creed is a good example of the gospel of salvation.

Mat 16:20-21  Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ. From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying,“Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!”

Though His disciples confessed Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God yet they were not saved because they rejected Him as the sacrificial Lamb, the gospel of salvation.

Similarly all those who had confessed and accepted Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God in evangelistic meetings, but had not accepted the gospel of salvation, they are not saved and without the Holy Spirit as the seal of redemption.

Mark 16:13-14  And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either. Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.

His disciples did not believe Him even after His resurrection but only after He had revealed Himself to them.

John 20:20-22  When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit."

After His disciples had accepted the gospel and were saved, He gave them the Holy Spirit of redemption.

Brethren, ensure that your sheep are saved for some may be unsaved because they may have believed a diluted or prosperity gospel. Get them to recite the Apostle's Greed often and made sure that they understand, believe and accept the gospel of salvation.
